How Typical Alzheimer's Clinical Trials Work: Alzheimer's Talk Episode 6

It is the Generation Program and the pharmaceutical company is Novartis. Presently Alzheimer’s prevention studies are for people of ages sixty to seventy five and the people that are cognitively of normal age because they are concerned about their memory and want to contribute to the study because of their family history of Alzheimer’s.

People can join study but they are required to be healthy. Things like high cholesterol and diabetes are okay but something like cancer or some major surgery can exclude someone. Specialists perform memory test based on which they include and exclude patients based on their memory score. Studies can give us preventions from moderate Alzheimer’s disease because cure for severe Alzheimer’s is not found yet. The sponsors need around 10,000 volunteers for this study worldwide while currently they have only about 4000, so they are looking to enroll for almost another year.

Initial steps:

The first step is to take a piece of saliva sample and finding for a specific marker that is called EPOE4. Everybody makes EPOE but it comes in different variations as EPOE2, EPOE3 and EPOE4. The individuals containing EPOE4 are at high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and more the copies of EPOE4 you have more likely you are at risk of developing Alzheimer’s and it also depends on you genetics.

Factors impacting Alzheimer’s:

There are factors as exercise, high cholesterol, eating right and being active but the genetics play the major role as a factor for developing and preventing  Alzheimer’s. Studies take 5 years as the visits are just once in three months and we study how people progress in next five years and how many people develops the memory problem and how many diagnose during this course of five years.

Point of focus:

Scientists are trying to reduce the amount of amyloid in brain. One of the theory of causes of Alzheimer’s is having excess of amyloid in brain. So, reducing the amount of amyloid in brain and some plaques sets starts to accumulate and the tangles and the nerves breakdown occurs in the brain. Reduction of amyloid in brain in this particular study medication.

From studies:

From pre-clinical studies, scientists did not have any cure but have found a lot of medication that are promising to slow down the memory to decline down. Somebody who is probably going to decline down over the next five years based on the amyloid in brain, genetic makeup and other risk factors like high cholesterol diabetes would generally develop Alzheimer’s over the next five years but with the medications it can be slowed down to fifteen to twenty years. It’s not a cure but it’s certainly slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s down.
